A couple years ago, while organizing the University High School Class of 1966 50th reunion, I had the opportunity to look at our class picture shot when I was only 18-years-old. I lost more than an hour talking to that kid wishing he could hear me.
Little did that “child” know that he would be married a little more than three years later. He became a husband, a father, a student and overwhelmed all in one Saturday afternoon. Then came fifty years of life, career, family, a daughter to go along with the son, divorce, wild days in the streets of Los Angeles, mind numbing relationships and somewhere in his spare time, a personal life including a granddaughter.
About five years ago I was able to get that “child’s” attention again and convince him to move back to Columbus. That happened right before Christmas 2018. I wanted to leave as much as I could in Los Angeles and that included a laptop computer that was stolen at LAX by a TSA agent. But I digress!
In between there were thirty plus years in the communications industry. It’s always amazed me that I became a writer for a career choice. I was on my way to becoming a lawyer when I remembered a high school dream to design, engineer, and drive race cars. I learned, however, that I would have to start college all over again to make up for the missed science and math classes in engineering. A political science professor suggested changing to journalism and writing about cars. And on that simple suggestion a career was launched.
I worked at two network-owned and operated television stations in the highly competitive broadcast news business Los Angeles where there were national and regional awards for television news writing, show production, segment producing and talk show development and producing.
In all of this experience I’m discovering I’m most proud of the two Emmy awards for writing and show production. And the Murrow Award for writing was very important for me because it was such a surprise to be considered.
I don’t know if returning to Columbus is anything more than turning the page to another chapter or, even, another section of chapters. I’m positive, though, this isn’t retirement unless learning to write fiction is retirement!
This rebirth of www.bybillwood.com will put me back in the mix of talking to you. I look forward to sharing me and learning about you.
Let’s give it a go!
